About Me

I am a Queer, cisgender Lesbian experienced Individual, Couple & Family Psychotherapist comfortable working with diverse presenting issues such as addictions, trauma and relationship concerns. I moved from Ottawa, Ontario 11 years ago where my last full-time role was as a Clinical Therapist at an Aboriginal health centre.  I have extensive training in working with diverse cultures, specifically Aboriginal people.  I have also worked within my LGBTQIA2S+ communities.

We have recently expanded into a mental health clinic, Lisa Shouldice Psychotherapy Clinic, that includes a team of several associates. I hand-picked each team member so they are experienced trauma therapists that are Queer and queer-allied allowing for culturally informed treatment. We now offer more complete, wrap-around services to our clients, their partners and families.

I have extensive knowledge of many psychological/therapeutic theories specifically Attachment and Systems theories.  My training predominantly includes emotion-focused techniques (EFT) as well as a more integrated approach that I use with clients, such as those appropriated from the cognitive and multicultural approach(es).   I use art therapy and sandtray therapy techniques as well.

My passion as a psychotherapist is working with people that have experienced childhood trauma from a personal history of sexual, physical, emotional/psychological abuse. My clients have often been diagnosed with a personality disorder such as Borderline (BPD) and/ or experienced Post Traumatic Stress symptoms. I coach clients in using and accessing culture and spirituality in their healing journey and individualized treatment plan. Most of my clients are part of the LGBT+ communities.

Approach to Supervision

I use a client-centred, emotion-focused supervisory approach. You will feel gently held and guided as you learn and figure out how to be the therapist you want &/or learn new clinical skills. We will bring personal awareness and possibly integrate your own personal experience and intuition into your role as a therapist and in your sessions. This will enable you to use more of your parts in this rewarding, amazing job we have as well as better connect with clients and guide them in healing. I will be directive and encouraging as needed. We will discuss boundaries and ensure you practice optimal self-care. You will find me honest and caring, helping you integrate new ways of being into your practice, and/or in further developing your identity as a Psychotherapist. I am able to guide and support you in learning to work with couples using IFS and emotion-focused techniques. You can learn Sandtray techniques with me and to use this to heal trauma. You may choose to learn how to integrate spirituality and culture into your practice. I identify as a cisgender Lesbian and work within the LGBTQAI2S communities and can help you learn the daily, lived experience of being part of this community and facilitating healing with our amazing members. We will honour your intersectionality, how to practice in line with your values and use them to do this work. I am blessed in that I genuinely love my job. I enjoy working with people of various cultures, sexualities, gender presentations and spiritualities. I feel the most excited and inspired working with people that have trauma histories and may have been diagnosed with a Personality Disorder. I think outside the box. I feel honoured to be chosen to be a part of you learning new ways of doing this incredible work, adding to your already developed repatoire, or simply getting the hours needed to meet regulation requirements. I can be a regular support or someone you make an appointment with once in a while to talk about a topic I specialize in that you want to learn more about.
