About Me

I’m Ellen Bird, MSW, RCSW, and the founder of Birdie Counselling in Calgary, Alberta. I provide relational, strengths-based clinical supervision for social workers and mental health clinicians, with particular expertise in child and adolescent mental health, family work, trauma, EMDR, and play-based therapy.

I bring approximately 10 years of experience working with children, youth, families, and neurodiverse students across community, school-based, and private practice settings. My clinical experience includes anxiety, depression, grief and loss, trauma, obsessive-compulsive concerns, emotional regulation, self-esteem, identity development, attachment, and family relationship challenges.

I particularly enjoy supervising clinicians who work with children, adolescents, young adults, and families, as well as clinicians who want to deepen their skills in child-centred and play-based therapy, EMDR with children and youth, attachment-based practice, family work, narrative therapy, and trauma-informed care.

My supervision style is warm, collaborative, curious, and practical. I want supervision to be a space where you can bring the messy, complicated, “I’m not quite sure what to do here” moments of clinical practice without fear of judgment. Together, we can explore case conceptualization, clinical decision-making, therapeutic relationship dynamics, interventions, ethical questions, professional development, and your own experience as a clinician.

I believe effective clinical supervision is about more than reviewing cases. It is an opportunity to strengthen clinical skills, develop confidence, deepen self-awareness, and build a practice that is ethical, thoughtful, and authentically yours.

I offer individual, dyadic, and small-group clinical supervision virtually across Alberta, with in-person supervision available in Calgary.

Approach to Supervision

My approach to clinical supervision is relational, strengths-based, trauma-informed, attachment-focused, and grounded in the belief that good supervision should build both clinical skill and confidence. I see supervision as a space to slow down, get curious, and bring the real-life complexities of clinical work. You can bring challenging cases, uncertainty, ethical questions, stuck points, therapeutic relationship dynamics, or the moments when you think, “I’m not quite sure what to do here.” We’ll work through them together with curiosity rather than judgment. I believe courage is an important part of becoming a confident clinician. Supervision can be a place to take thoughtful risks, try something new, examine what isn't working, and develop the confidence to trust your clinical instincts. My role is not to tell you there is one “right” way to practice, but to help you strengthen your clinical foundation while developing an approach that feels authentic to you. I also bring a strong interest in creative approaches to clinical practice. I particularly enjoy supporting clinicians working with children, youth, and families who want to expand beyond traditional talk therapy. This can include play-based therapy, expressive and creative approaches, attachment-based interventions, EMDR with children and youth, narrative therapy, Emotion-Focused Family Therapy, and other experiential approaches. Consultation is an important part of my supervision style. We can use supervision to think collaboratively about case conceptualization, treatment planning, interventions, clinical decision-making, family dynamics, therapeutic relationships, and ethical considerations. I aim to offer thoughtful consultation while leaving room for your own clinical voice, knowledge, and professional judgment. My goal is for supervisees to leave supervision feeling more grounded, capable, and confident — with practical ideas they can bring directly into their clinical work. I offer individual, dyadic, and small-group clinical supervision and consultation for social workers and mental health clinicians, with a particular focus on children, adolescents, young adults, and families. Supervision is available virtually across Alberta and in person in Calgary.
