CRPO Exam Resources and Prep Courses in Ontario (2026)

If you’re preparing to take the CRPO exam, you’ve probably searched high and low for CRPO exam resources and prep courses to help you prepare and study for the registration exam.

As we’ve noticed there are few articles listing available CRPO exam resources to help registrants with exam preparation, we’ve taken it upon ourselves to compile a list of some of the CRPO exam resources and prep courses that we’ve found.

This article lists official and unaffiliated CRPO exam resources and prep courses so that you have one less thing to worry about during the exam preparation process.

CRPO Exam

After registering with the CRPO, Registered Psychotherapist’s (Qualifying) are required to pass the Canadian Professional Standard for Counselling and Psychotherapy (CPSCP) along with completing other criteria laid out by the CRPO in order to gain full registration as a Registered Psychotherapist (CRPO, n.d.1 & CRPO, n.d.2). In Canada, the CPSCP exam is offered by the COMPASS Centre for Examination Development, a national non-for-profit organization designed to help provide “competency-based assessment of the counselling and psychotherapy profession” (COMPASS Centre for Examination Development, n.d.1.)

According to the CRPO, each year there are two exam sittings: in the spring and fall. However, dates vary year-to-year (CRPO, n.d.2). The CRPO exam (also known as the Registration Examination) is a proctored “computer-based, simulation-style, and competency-based” (Compass Centre for Examination Development, n.d.2.) assessment.

Official CRPO Exam Resources

While the CRPO, doesn’t offer specific exam preparation resources, the COMPASS Centre for Examination Development does. 

The COMPASS Centre for Examination Development provides a free 62-page Competency-Based Case Study Workbook with a series of cases and questions to help you critically analyze and work through unique client and practitioner scene roles. 

Also, the COMPASS Centre for Examination Development also offers an online, remotely proctored Practice Exam that can be taken from anywhere. The practice exam is only available to current registrants of Registration Examination, and does require formal registration to take the practice exam (Compass Centre for Examination Development, n.d.3.). While the practice exam will not provide the exact questions that you’ll receive on your CRPO exam, it can help you learn the structure of the exam, and the types of questions that you may be presented with. Also, as this practice exam is developed and delivered by the same organization who offers the CRPO Exam, you’ll have an idea of the exam process on exam day.

Unaffiliated CRPO Exam Resources 

While the CRPO and COMPASS Centre for Examination Development do not endorse CRPO exam resources outside of the official resources provided in the previous section, there are a variety of organizations and practitioners who offer CRPO exam resources and prep course to help course registrants, like yourself, succeed.

While it’s impossible for anyone to provide you with the exact questions that will show up on the CRPO exam, these CRPO exam resources and prep courses can provide invaluable insights into the kinds of questions that may show up on the exam, and help you practice your CRPO exam taking skills. Also, organizations who provide CRPO exam resources and prep courses are often have Registered Psychotherapists on their team who have sat on and passed the CRPO exam themselves.
